RallyNippon最終日は、全4日間1000Km余りの行程の残り200Kmほどを琵琶湖畔長浜ロイヤルホテルから琵琶湖大橋を経て対岸の比叡山から京都へち至るルートでした。午前8時半にゼッケン1番から順次、長浜ロイヤルホテルの駐車場横の直線に設定された「線踏み」からスタート。最終日最初の3連「線踏み」は50mを10秒、30mを6秒、20mを5秒という、若干スピードの高い設定。慎重にアタックしたのですが、最初の50mが長く、スピードを殺せずにコンマ5秒早着。さらにリズムが早目で、全部コンマ3秒以上の早着をしてしまいました。ま、1秒以内の誤差ではあるのですが、これでは、ダメです。またまた気落ちしてコースオン。彦根城を周回し、琵琶湖畔を走行。琵琶湖大橋を渡れば奥比叡ドライブウェイから一気にワインディングロードを登り詰めて比叡山延暦寺へ。この延暦寺の駐車場で、今年のRallyNippon最後の「線踏み」が行われました。最終3連「線踏み」は30mを8秒、20mを5秒、20mを6秒という、一見簡単そうでいて、なかなか微妙な設定。何とかきっちり締め括ろうと臨んだのですが、「ヨシッ」というほど満足出来るものではなく、コンマ3秒、コンマ4秒、コンマ４秒誤差、、、という具合で終わってしまいました。精進料理を頂き、国宝「根本中堂」に参拝し、荘厳な雰囲気の中に身を置きながら、「線踏み」で、コンマ００秒を突き詰めることの難しさと奥深さを改めて悟ったのでありました。その後は、比叡山ドライブウェイを下りて、京都市内を抜け、下賀茂神社からゴールの上賀茂神社へクラシックカーを連ねて、いわばパレードラン。沿道で手を振り暖かく迎えてくれる人々に応えながらゴールの上賀茂神社に到着すると、例年にも増して大勢の観衆の方々が待ち受けていました。午後3時半、「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮにとって3回目のRallyNipponが終わりました。前半2日の荒天候、後半2日は秋晴れの快晴に恵まれたものの、「天気晴朗なれど“線踏み”コンマ００秒への道は険し、、」というところでした。ただ、クラシックカーラリー大ベテランのＴさんにコ・ドライバーとして乗ってもらったことで、上位グループへのきっかけは掴めました。1秒の“長さ”も体内時計に刻み込むことも出来たような気がします。上賀茂神社でRallyNippon参加者全員が「交通安全」のお祓いを受け、さらには、参加車全車が「帰路安全」のお祓いを受けて、すべてが終了したのですが、私は、一人、本堂の屋根修復の際に使用される檜皮葺の一枚に「祈願　コンマ００秒達成」としたためて奉納、お布施と共に“神頼み”もしてきました。ということで、午後7時から京都・ハイアットリージェンシーホテルでは、タキシード着用のDunhillフォーマルパーティと表彰式が行われました。京都市長、京都府長などの挨拶、そして、東儀秀樹さんのコンサートに続き、発表された「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮの成績は、77台中37位でした。1日目、２日目、３日目、４日目と順調に順位を上げたものの、なかなか思うに任せず、、、、の結果でした。また、来年、、、ということで、４日間1000Km余りをご一緒した参加者とのグラスを傾けての談笑は、夜が更けるのも忘れて続き、来年の再会を誓いあいました。
The last day of the 1000km 4 day race was a 200km run from Nagahama Royal Hotel on the shores of the Biwa Lake, across the great bridge, over Hiei Mountain and down into Kyoto. Car no 1 started at 8am and each car started the day with a time trial. The 3 point trial was a fast one and one with a 50m section. I made it too quickly thru the first 50m and ended up faster than was required. It was all under 1 sec but this is not enough in a classic rally. Anyway, on to Hikone Castle and around the Biwa lake and up the winding section to Hieizan. At the parking lot of Enryaku Temple, the last time trial awaited us. We tried our best, and we did not do badly, but still, lots of room for improvement. We were treated with temple vegetarian feast and a visit to the national treasure Nemotodo. I was left with the impression that it will take a lot more training for me to be attain the zen of classic car time trials. We went down the Hiei Driveway, thru the city of Kyoto and into Shimogamo Shrine. All the participated in a parade run into Kamigamo Shrine. A huge crowd awaited us at this final point. At 3pm, my .122 Amazon made it across the goal of its 3rd Rally Nippon. The weather was better than anticipated, but the times were not... We all received another blessing at the temple. I stayed after the crowd had left and wrote a prayer that I would able to achieve timings that were less than .00 sec off the mark. At least, with the help of my veteran co-driver, I was able to get a feeling. At 7pm, the final black tie dinner party sponsored by Dunhill started. The final standing were announced and my .122 Amazon was 37th among 77 entrants. Oh well. Better luck next year.

RallyNippon3日目は、午前７時には鳥羽国際ホテルをチェックアウト、ビニールカバーで包んだ
「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮの水滴を拭って、午前7時半には伊勢神宮駐車場へ集合しました。今朝は昨夜までの雨も上がって晴れ間も見えはじめて、伊勢神宮は、雨上がりの静寂に包まれ、とても神聖な雰囲気でした。本宮大鳥居前の駐車場にラリーカーをずらりと並べ、RallyNippon参加者は、玉砂利を踏みしめて本宮へ参拝。参加者全員でお祓いを受けて、雅楽を拝見しました。その後、午前10時前に3日前のステージを開始。伊勢西ＩＣから伊勢道を経て関ＩＣを降りて土山宿へ。鈴鹿山麓の宿場町として栄えた土山宿は、今なお色濃く旧東海道の面影を残しており、歓迎の人並みの続く中、スタンプポイントを通過。さらに歌川広重の版画「東海道五十三次・水口」にも描かれた水口宿でもスタンプをもらい、一路、滋賀県甲賀市水口町の「ＪＡこうか」のショッピングモールへ。この広大なショッピングモールには、RallyNippon観戦のための多くの出店やステージが設定され、秋晴れとなった日曜ということもあり、大勢の観衆がクラシックカーの到着を待ちわびていました。ここでのランチタイム・レストコントロール90分の前に、今日最初の3連「線踏み」です。25mを9秒、20mを6秒、25mを6秒という、すでにお決まりとなった曲がったコース設定です。昨日の、“猛省”もあり、慎重にアタックした結果は、すべてコンマ1秒以内のまあまあの出来。ちょっと気を良くして、何とも素晴らしい「椎茸のもぎとり」バーベキューランチを頂きました。こんなに“獲りたて”の椎茸が甘くて美味しいものだとは知りませんでした。さらにとろけるように柔らかい松坂牛も、どんどんバーベキュー。これでビールがあれば申し分ないのですが、ラリー中なので何ともなりません。おそらく４０００人以上の大観衆が集まった会場では、RallyNippon恒例の雅楽師東儀秀樹さんのコンサートが行われ、素晴らしい演奏に大喝采。本当に、毎年、東儀秀樹さんの献身的なファンサービスには頭が下がります。ゼッケン１９番の1954年　ＡＣ　ＡＣＥで我々と共にラリーを戦いながら（それも、ちゃんと上位入賞圏内で「線踏み」をクリアしながら、、）コースの要所で即席演奏会を行うのですから、、、、。我々は、ゆっくり素晴らしいバーベキューランチを堪能して、午後1時半過ぎから、ランチ前の「線踏み」と同じコースを使用して指示の異なる今日2回目の「線踏み」からスタート。25mを8秒、20mを5秒、25mを5秒の3連続「線踏み」です。十分にイメージトレーニングをして臨んだつもりでしたが、若干スピードアップ指示となったことに、見事にハメられて、何と2秒近くも大失敗を犯してしまいました。せっかく美味しいかったバーベキューランチも何か後味の悪い結果となってしまいました。またまた気を取り直して、国宝の天台宗金剛輪寺に参拝してスタンプポイント。ここでも由緒ある能舞台で東儀秀樹さんは、集まった観衆へ即席コンサートをプレゼント。その後、ブリヂストンの彦根工場を訪問通過して多賀大社前の駐車場で今日3回目の「線踏み」。15mを5秒、10mを4秒、15mを4秒の設定。5秒、4秒、4秒という短時間の設定は、さらに難しく「最初良くても終わりダメ、、」で落ち込んだまま名神高速　彦根ＩＣから米原ＩＣを経て琵琶湖畔の長浜ロイヤルホテルにゴールしました。またまた寝つかれない夜を迎えることとなりました。明日は、最終４日目。何としても心機一転。満足の行く「線踏み」で締めくくりたいものです。
On the 3rd day of Rally Nippon, we checked out of the Toba Kokusai Hotel, wiped clean our .122 Amazon and gathered at the Ise shrine at 7.30am. The rain had let up and we started seeing signs of blue skies and whole shrine was enshrouded in a quiet calm. We parked our classic cars in front of the ootorii and traveled on foot to the main shrine where we were blessed and enjoyed some traditional music. At 10am we left the shrine and started of from Ise West IC to Tsuchiyama Inn, an old town close to the Suzuka Mountains, then onto Minakuchi- famous for being depicted by Hiroshige and on to Koga shopping mall. A large crowd had gathered at this huge mall where lunch and rest awaited, but before this, a 3 point time control. After the bad experience yesterday, we cautiously approached the control area and made it thru without too much drama. Lunch was barbecue and we were able to pick our own shiitake mushrooms which was accompanied with great Matsuzaka beef. Beer would have completed it but being a rally, this was out of the question. Hideki Togi did a traditional flute performance for the gathered crowd. I really respect his dedication to his fans and while he entertains the crowds, he still manages to hold down the time controls to the point where he is always in the top competition. After a wonderful lunch, we were treated to round 2 time control. It was in the same area as the 1st, but the speed had increased and I took the bait and came up with a shocking close to 2 sec mistake. The wonderful lunch didn't seem so wonderful anymore. Of to national treasure Kongorin Temple and again, Togi-san came up with a performance. After that, a visit to Bridgestone factory in Hikone, a stop at Taga Temple for another time trial. What started out well ended up bad. We felt badk as we went onto the Meishin expressway from Hikone IC and onto Yonebara IC by the Biwa lake. We are staying at the Nagahama Royal Hotel. We will sleep here and try to get our spirits up by the next morning.

RallyNippon　２日目は、箱根・仙石原のハイアットリージェンシー箱根ホテルから、「東海道五十三次」のルートを巡り、旧東海道をひた走り、清水から浜松、そして伊良湖からフェリーで鳥羽へと渡るコース。相変わらず雨が降り続ける午前8時にゼッケン1番がスタート。「・１２２」AMAZONは、午前8時半には、箱根峠の旧東海道を走り始めました。つづら折れのワインディングから静岡方面を見下ろすあたりでは、時折雲の切れ目から青空が顔を出し始め、天気回復かな、、、と思わせることもありましたが、やはり、すぐに雨の中の走行となります。途中、旧東海道の宿場町などへと脇道へそれるコースは、由比漁港のスタンプポイントへ。ここでは、由比漁港の方々が名物の桜海老の天ぷらを配ってくださいました。今朝は、ワイパーの修復などを試み、朝食の時間が無かったこともあり、せっかくいただいた桜エビなのですから、、、と、出店でそばを注文。桜えびそばを、、、と、カウンター前で出来上がりを待っていると、コ・ドライバーのＴさんが「SUNAさん！！、車が動いてる！！！」との叫び声。振り向くと「・１２２」AMAZONが、ユルユルと漁港の岸壁に向かって動いているではありませんか！！慌てて二人で車の前に走り、岸壁すれすれでストップ。この岸壁、微妙に傾斜していて、さらにサイドブレーキをかけるのか甘かったのが原因です。ま、とにかく「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮが漁港に落ちるのは避けられました。驚きの朝食後も旧東海道を走り続け、静岡の駿府城跡にある駿府公園に到着したのは午前11時過ぎ。ここでランチ前の3連続「線踏み」です。またまた、ぐるりと回るコースは、50mを16秒、30mを10秒、20mを6秒の連続「線踏み」です。ここでも、鬼門は、最初の50m16秒です。距離が長いだけに調整がミソです。で、この鬼門でやってしまいました、、。なんと、1秒以上も早着通過してしまったのです。それまでは、何とかコンマ1秒以下でまとめていただけに、ショック！！。続く30m、20mもその早着の影響で？？？落ち込んで駿府城の中でのランチにも箸が進みません。駿府公園からのスタートには、3人の“ピエロ”が、私のミスをあざ笑うように見送ってくれました。しかし、落ち込んでいても仕方ありません。気を取り直して一路、東名静岡ＩＣから土砂降りの雨が降り続く高速道路をクラシックカーが編隊を作り浜松西ＩＣへ。浜松からは、また旧東海道を走り、浜名湖畔を眺めながら豊橋を経て伊良湖のフェリー埠頭へ。フェリー乗船前にまたまた3連「線踏み」です。心機一転臨んだ「線踏み」は、30m10秒、40m12秒、30m8秒というこれまた回り込む設定。もの凄いコンセントレーションで臨み、最初と2番目は、バッチりだったのですが、最後の8秒、窓から雨の中、身を乗り出してカウントするコ・ドライバーのＴさんが、手頸をヒラヒラさせるのを“早い”と勘違いしてアクセルオフ。なんてことはありません。そのまま、、、とＴさんは指示したのですが、遅れてしまいました、、、。（涙）そんなこんなのドタバタでしたが、貸切りフェリーに乗ってしまえば、何もすることはありません。1時間の乗船で三重県・鳥羽へ。乗船時は晴れ間も見えて、やっと、雨ともお別れ、、、“不運”ともお別れ、、、などと船内でアイスクリームなどを食べて頭を冷やしていたのですが、なんてことはありません。午後5時半過ぎで真っ暗となった鳥羽港では、土砂降りの雨に雷まで鳴り響いていました。鳥羽港から２Ｋｍほどの鳥羽国際ホテルに到着し、主催者が配ってくれたビニールカバーを「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮにかけて、早々に夕食会場へ。今宵のテーブルには、モータージャーナリストや編集仲間が集い、さながら本業の「媒体試乗会の宴席」。皆んな、クラシックラリー経験の豊富な方々ばかりなのですが、「線踏み」論に花が咲き、喧々諤々、、。でも、一番ためになったのは、「Giro　di　Karuizawa」で５連勝もしている大ベテランのＯさんご夫妻の「線踏み」指南でした。なるほどという「匠の技」が、次から次へと飛び出し、、、もう、何だか分からない世界！！その余韻で、Ｂａｒの前を通過することも出来ずに、ｺ･ﾄﾞﾗｲﾊﾞｰのＴさんと中に入ると、そこには、今日ずっと一緒に走っていたドイツから参加する1955年BenzのＰさん。今回のRallyNipponには、ドイツ、アメリカ、イタリアそして、台湾、などからの遠征組がたくさんいます。多分、日本で一番外人遠征組が多いのも今年の「RallyNippon」の特徴かもしれません。そんなインターナショナルな雰囲気でワイワイとグラスを傾け、鳥羽の夜は更けていったのでした。
The 2nd day of Rally Nippon started off from Hakone Sengokubara Hyatt Regency. The route carried us thru the ancient roads of Tokaido 53 stages. From Shimizu, thru Hamamatsu, around Irako and onto the ferry towards Toba. Car no1 started at 8am and my .122 Amazon started at 8.30am. As we wound our way down into Shizuoka, blue skies started to show themselves thru the clouds and hinted of the weather turning towards the better, but this quickly turned out the opposite and we were driving thru rain again. We stopped by Yui port and were rewarded by a bowl of hot soba topped with the local delicacy sakura shrimp. I had been working on the wipers of my Amazon this morning so didn't have time to have breakfast. The soba was a welcome treat but just as i was about to get my chipsticks into it, my co-driver shouted that my Amazon was moving ! I turned around just in time to see my Amazon slowing making its way down towards the harbor wall. We ran out to stop the car right before it hit the wall. The port was gently inclined and I had not pulled the side brake. After this slight surprise, we drove out and reached the Sunpu castle at around 11am. Another time control awaited us before lunch. This was another circled time control and I made a rather big mistake causing me to cross the first control around 1sec early. I was never able to get over this and it affected the 2nd remaining time measurements... We left the Sunfu park with clowns waving at us, but no time to be feeling low. Off againg to rainy Tomei expressway and on to Hamamatsu West IC. From Hamamatsu, we used the old Tokai road again and went on to Irako Ferry landing passing by Hamana Lake and thru Toyohashi. Right before we got onto the ferry, another 3 time measurement awaited us. The first 2 points went great, but at the 3rd point, my co-driver who was leaning out of the window to get a better view of the measurement point was waving his hand. I understood this to mean that I should slow down, whereas he meant for me to keep going. You can imagine what this meant. Oh well, we made our way onto the ferry, fed on some icecream to work out the tension building and spent an hour to get to Toba. It was completely dark and some thunder welcomed us along with heavy rain. We got to the Toba Kokusai Hotel which was about 2km away from the ferry port, covered my .122 and rushed off towards dinner. A group of motor journalists gathered at our table. They were all classic rally experts and we spent the evening discussing the techniques of time controls. The best advice came from Mr. & Mrs. O who have been winning Giro di Karuizawa for 5 years in a row. We couldn't stay away from the bar and we were joined by Mr. P from Germany driving a 1955 Benz. The Rally Nippon has become an international rally with entrants from Germany, the US, Italy and Taiwan and each year it becomes more exciting and competitive.
