I received a envelope today and when I opened it, out came a rather thick Dunhill catalog and a 40% off coupon with the letters "Gentlemen Start your Engines" on it. Also, a Rally Nippon sticker came with it. Rally Nippon is officially sponsored by Dunhill. Every year, the leather pass holders for the credentials are made by dunhill. This year's sticker has been designed to be much less flashy compared to last year and it will look much better on my Amazon. I will go pick up my .122 today and as it is a fantastic autumn day today, I will bring it for a short drive.

Rally Nippon has just sent out posters to all the entrants. Last year, the theme was a red open top classic car driving through Shirakawago and a car parked in front of Yakushi Temple. this year, Aston Martin is celebrating its 75th year and the rally has collaborated with them for the posters. As one of the main supporters for the rally is Unesco, the posters show various Aston Martins in front of Japan's famous heritages such as Kanazawa, Heijokyo, Yakushi temple, Todai temple, etc. The classic cars are engineering heritages which will make their way through the autumn scenary of Japan through the various world heritages.

Today, Rally Nippon announced the entries and issued car numbers. A total of 70 cars will enter. This is an increase of 34 cars over the 36 that entered last year. The oldest entrant is a 1924 Bentley W.O. and goes up to cars made in the 1970s. My .122 Amazon was given car # 51. The car numbers seem to be distributed by year make of the cars. Mr. S who sat aside me as codriver last year is now the driver of car #35, a 1949 Bentley Roiston Special (the red open car below). The famous Japanese traditional musian Mr. Togi will enter with his AC ACE (car #21) while actor Toshiaki Karasawa in a 1967 Toyota 2000GT. My Amazon in the only Volvo within this group of auspicious classic cars, but looking at the entry list, the start is now much a reality.

Its already 20th Oct. Rally Nippon start on the 5th of Nov. There is only about 2 weeks before the start. I've been really tied up with work recently, and have started working on my own project and this has eaten up most of my time from early morning to late night. I left my .122 in the workshop last week to be worked on for the upcoming rally. In particular, I wanted to figure out why the clutch oil kept getting really black even after replacing the lutch master cylinder for more than 2 times. I asked the workshop to give it all they have as I did not want to repeat last year's nightmare where I had to retire at the start (photo is last year's start). I got a call yesterday evening and they seemed very confident that my .122 was now in mint shape. They are forecasting rain today and tomorrow so I will probably pick up my .122 over the weekend. Just as I received the phone call, I also received vol 1 of Rally Nippon News. It wrote out the course from start thru the stopover points. The start is at 10.30am 5th Nov from the front of Akasaka Sacas. From there we go to Yamanakako where we stay for the night. Next night we stay at the famous Kagaya spa hotel in Kanazawa and then on to Biwako. The final night will be spent at Hyatt Regency Kyoto where we will be attending a champaign dinner - "Dunhill Night". This means I need to grab a tuxedo before the start. I guess most people will be working at 10am on a friday, but if you do have some time, please stop over at Akasa Sacus. I will be there with my hand waxed .122 ready for the start.

I went to the Meiji Shrine to see the start of the La Fest Mille Miglia 2010 today. It was raining, but since it was close by to my house, I started off and got there about 11am. For some reason, there were cars already coming out of the car park. I asked the official what time the start is and he told me it was 11am. I thought it was odd, but then found out that they started out from the park 11am, gathered again at Harajuku station to start from there at 12pm. I was able to see all 113 entrants start out from Tokyo. There were the regulars - 26BUGATTI¡¡T37A, 48MASERATI¡¡A6GCS driven by Japanese star M. Sakai, 54ASTONMARTIN¡¡DB2/4 by J. Inagawa. Within these stars, former Formula 1 star Aguri Suzuki and Kosuke Matsuura also a racing driver, were sitting in a 57MERCEDES¡¡BENZ¡¡300SL¡¡ROADSTER. Aguri is an old crony as we made our way around the F1 circuits, and Kosuke is that kid that used to an excited kid doing cart racing, made his way to CART/IRL. I peaked into the cockpit and saw that they had a Map ShotII and Time ShotII installed. But Kosuke said that they did not work and even if they did, they wouldn't know what to do with it. Their trip meter was also not working as "the distance would increase"... So how are they going to navigate thru the course. Apparantly for them, the iPhone is all they needed. Kosuke has never driven in a Rally race so I asked him about the rally maps. He answered that he would just follow the car in front of him and that the distance was something he would figure out as he went on. This is Kosuke's 12th year since he entered as an apprentice under Aguri. For 4 years they have almost lived toether. Kosuke said that he is thinking of making this the last act of apprentinship. Right behind Aguri/Kosuke car, was a 54¡¡FIAT¡¡1100/103TV driven by a good friend Mr. K who is a veteran of classic rallying. Its probably better that Aguri/Kosuke let Mr. K go ahead of them. The race will run all the way to Urabandai today and under these rainy skies, the open cars will have a stuggle. I hope that that everyone enjoys the 4 day 1000km rally. As for myself, I have put my .122 into the garage for a out and out check.
