Another hot summer in Tokyo. Or so it should be, but this year, we have been riddled with rain, typhoons and to top it off, earthquakes. With this weather, my .122 is under 2 layers of wraps. In this period, some good news came in. Mr. T. who is the owner of the antique shop that found my Marschal lamps for me, sent me an email that he met Mr. A living in Gunma. This Mr. A. is one of the original members of the Amazon Owners Club of 30 years past. He still has his '67 Amazon 123GT, has taken on a '63 Amazon 122S and a P1800. With this little incident, I have been able to start email communications with Mr. A. again after a 30 year blank. He will be joining the Ikaho Classic Rally Meeting on Sep 20th and I look forward to see him again after all these years.

Our experience at Giro di Karuizawa was taken up in the most recent Car Graphic magazine. The article was titled "Old Rally Boy's Challenge". The content was more of self satisfaction than challenge, but the article covered 2 pages and the photos really had a lot of atmosphere. Please take a look for yourselves. As the article says, I am actually thinking about revenge. Maybe if the race was over a longer distance - this has made me consider entering a rally in October that covers about 1,000 kms. Before that, I will enter the Ikaho Classic Car Meeting - a one day event. That reminds me, today is the day of "Splendore Ikaho". Mr. K (PV544) and Mr. M (P1800) and other TACC have entered the event. Today has been cloudy with intermittent rain. This is probably easier on classic cars than the searing heat so one could say it was a good rally day.

I returned back from my business trip in Europe at the end of this month. Europe was hot but dry, but once I got off the plane at Narita, one was reminded of Thai or Vietnam and made one wonder about global warming. I ran to the garage to see how my .122 was and was happy to see that my .122 was looking slick and happy to see me. I decided to wax my car this weekend. I had been interested in a 100% Carnauba wax from Swizoel - a company with a history since 1930. When you go and purchase this product, the vendor asks what make, what model year, what color, whether it has been repainted, etc, and will give you the wax that is best suited for you. The wax I was given was a wopping 140euro - wax + cleaner + sponge. However, it did not come with a sponge for the wax. As I went thru the rather thick user manual, I found out the reason. According to the manual, the wax should applied by the palms of your hand. First, the old wax and other unnecessary components must come off by applying the cleaner every 1m2 and wiping before it the cleaner dries off. The cleaner must be applied either vertically or horizontally and should not be applied in circles (this part really was a lot of work). The wax was then applied by the palms of ones hand - the wax melting with the heat of the palms - in circular movements. Wait 10 minutes and buff with a very soft material (they were selling this, but I had decided not to as it was very expensive). Then dry in the sun for 3 hours, and buff again. Well, the result was very satisfactory and now my .122 has a shine that I had not expected an old car to have.

Yesterday was Sunday and on my way back from Belgium to Germany, I had the opportunity to see an interesting race. Passing Nurburgring, we saw that they had a truck race called "Truck Grand Prix" going on. This is a race held by truck heads. Trucks without their payload are monsters with smaller wheel base and huge tires and they all look like monster choroQs. Volvo, Benz, Man, Scania, Renault, they were all there as works team and the race was a FIA event. Truck heads with racing tires and 14 speed gear boxes were running around the F1 course making the course look really small. It was like watching a sumo event with pushing and shoving going on all around. During this, there are trucks that turn over. Once turned over, it takes an even bigger wrecker to pick them up. This type of race would never happen in Japan and neither Hino nor Nissan Diesel would ever consider doing something like this. It is probably a race which is possible only in Europe where truck races have been held for a long time. A lot of the crowd that were watching were families. Entrance fee was 56Euro for a three day silver pass and was not cheap. But there were a lot more people at Nurburgring then there was at some F1 races held in Japan.

These last few weeks, I have been in France, Germany and Belgium for work. Yesterday, I was able to finish my meetings in the morning and I got a sudden urge to eat ramen. I decided I would drive into Dusseldorf for lunch. I was in Brussels so that means to get to my ramen lunch I would have to drive 150km back and another 150km forth. The maximum speed in Belgium is 130km/h and once in Germany, although there are some areas where there are speed limits, generally the autobahn has no speed limits, but its still tok me 1.5 hrs. I decided to go to "Takumi" which is part of the "Nishiyama Ramen" grouping. I decided that since I had driven all the way to Dusselfdorf, I would stop by the classic car garage called Meilenwerk. There seems to be a recent trend for renovating old rail yard warehouses into climate controlled warehouses and garages. This one has restore garage, parts, accesory shop, boutique, restaurant/cafe all in one. You can wander around for free and look at the stored classic cars so lots of car manias come by for a visit. During my several previous visits, I was not able to see an Amazon, but this time, I saw an Amazon and a P1800 in the same 2 story unit. They were probably owned by the same owner. Both had H number plates - H means that the car is recognized as a historic car and is eligible to receive tax breaks and special consideration for inspections. This is something that the Japanese should imitate if it wants to have a true automobile culture. Just as we were about to leave, a beautiful PV544 came in. This PV544 had a number plate PV54H and the body color was the same as my .122. After my much stressed business meeting, this was a very relieving outing. I will be going back to Japan in 4,5 days and look forward to see how my .122 will turn out.

I went over last evening to see how my .122 was getting along. The engine had already been fit, along with the Marchal lamps. After Giro di Karuizawa, the leather seat had come to the point where the coils almost burst out, but this had also been repaired. The engine, cooling system had been overhauled, the bushes around the wheels were replaced, and all that remained is to try to stop the rust. The holes had to be filled and everything had to be coated with silicon. I have to go overseas from tomorrow until August, so I will have to wait until I get back to see how it all turns out.

A meeting for TACC (Tokyo Ariake Car Club) was held on 11th July (Sat), but since my .122 was still in the shop, I decided to hitch a ride on 123GT Mr. O's BMW. A crowd of classic cars was already gathered in the parking lot when we got there. Mr. K with his PV544 and old time number plate was here from Kanagawa. A yellow Volvo 144 (1970) had newly joined the meeting, imported from Australia. At this meet, I was able to get a sticker from the Volvo Amazon Fan Club. I had created the Amazon owners club in 1977 with the father of Mr. K (PV544) and Mr. M (Green Amazon). Back then, there were 42 Amazon owners. However, as I got busy overseas, the old club had disintegrated. Then in 1997, the club was reinstated under the name as Volvo Amazon Fan Club. When I had created the original club, it reflected the times where things were rock and roll, hot rod, beach surfer and the sticker we had made in yellow and white. The sticker I received today was green and had a more classic look to it. Looking at both gives one a sense of the 30 years that have gone by since I last drove a Amazon and I plan to put both on my .122 to reflect back on my various encounters with this great car.

Tokyo has finally gotten to the point where we see the sun mark on the weather report. This means that we are about to get out of the rainy season. When we went into the rainly season, I introduced the book called "Amazon once more time". A fellow Amazon rider - Mr. M. introduced me to another story by Mr. Itsuki where the Amazon appears. This is called "Nippon Taikutsuto" and was a feature in Bungei Shunjyu around 1970. I went to the bookstore to look for a copy but it was too old to be sold, so I reverted to Amazon.com and acquired a copy for Yen 1 with mailing cost of Yen 340. It was a weathered book already turned yellow with age, but absolutely amazing. For our generation who had spent their youth in the 60s and 70s, Hiroyuki Itsuki has had a big influence on us. This story is a rare nonesense story where the leader of the 5 man Taikutsuto tries to set off Mount Fuji at all cost. Once again, Itsuki describes the Amazon artistically. "The Amazon is a bear with the skin of a sheep, stong, safe and when needed, faster than a wolf." The storyline itself is a bit bizzare, but as Itsuki himself writes in the afterword that he wrote for reading while rolling around on a hot summer afternoon, so why not try this summer. The minicar in the phot is a Amazon Polis by Revel which I found in Hokkaido while I was there for work.

During the most recent overhaul of my .122, I found this rather dangerous problem around the wheel and tire. In order to enter into Giro di Karuizawa, I had searched all over for a 165/80R 15 tire and finally had found one called Sneaker by Bridgestone that seemed to give me a good grip and a good ride so I had gone up and down mountain passes during the rally. However, it turned out that there was a hole in the wheel and the the wheel nut was just hanging on to the outer edge of the wheel hole. In order to balance the wheel, you need to put equal pressure on the nots, but if you add to much pressure to the one with the hole, the nut will just go through. Therefore, if there is any large pressure on the wheel and tire, they could just come off. Glad I didn't know during Giro, but when one looks back, I can only thank god that nothing happened during the rally. So now I had to look for a new wheel, but finding a 4.5X15 inch steel wheel proved to be quit a task. With the help of Mr. O (123GT), I found a wheel that is used on old HiAces using a spacer with the wheel. I bought a set of Vredstein tires off of Mr. O. Mr. O had found the Vredsteins on the internet, but the tires were very hard and ended up in with his 123GT not being able to perform properly so he had asked Michelin to develop a one off tire for him. As I am in the middle of a rather large overhaul, I decided I couldn't afford a one off and opted for the cheaper albeit less performing Vredsteins. At least these should not fall off the car. I had the new wheels painted to the same color as the body at a total cost of Yen 60,000. Unfortunately, the form of the wheels does not currently allow for me to put on the original wheel caps with the V sign on it, and I am currently trying various measures to try to get the cap on.

A week as passed since my .122 went thru its initial health check and it is undergoing various "surgeries" everyday. I went over to see how things are going on the weekend and they were just about to put in the engine. Mr. N had given me a SU twin carburator which had gone thru an overhaul and this looked like a brand new carburator now. The master cylinder for the clutch had been changed to a Volvo genuine part. The stay on the alternater side for the fan belt pulley used to be a alternative part which made the belt pull at an angle so the stay was replaced so that the belt now worked without any stress. One of the suprises was that we couldn't see where the fuel strainer was - if this was the case, it is a miracle that no impurities had gotten mixed into the engine. So a domestic fuel strainer was attached. From here, the engine, carburator will go thru various adjustment, but for now, I am happy to see a now healthy heart (engine) with its bright red carburator being loaded back into my .122.
