Giro　di　Karuizawaゴールの翌日、5月30日（月）に「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮと私は、軽井沢から上越自動車道、上信越道を経て、信州中野ＩＣから志賀高原の「熊の湯」へと向かいました。Giro　di　Karuizawaでも、ごくごく近くを疾走したのですが、今回の目的は別です。「熊の湯ホテル」のＳ社長が、1969年からワンオーナーでＡＭＡＺＯＮ１２３ＧＴを乗り続けていらっしゃることを知り、昨年末にＡＭＡＺＯＮを入手された石川県・和倉温泉のＴ社長と合流してＡＭＡＺＯＮ談義を温泉につかりながらしよう、、、という趣向。軽井沢から約２時間、石川県・和倉温泉からは約５時間、、、生憎の土砂降りの中、「熊の湯ホテル」に２台のＡＭＡＺＯＮが集結しました。”緑色！！”の素晴らしい硫黄温泉を堪能して、さっそくＡＭＡＺＯＮ談義です。「熊の湯ホテル」のＳ社長のＡＭＡＺＯＮ１２３ＧＴは１９６９年式。和倉温泉のＴ社長のＡＭＡＺＯＮ１２２も１９６９年式。Ｓ社長は、１２３ＧＴのほかに１９６８年式ＳＡＡＢ、１９６７年式ジャガーX100レプリカ、シトロエンＤＳなどをお持ちでした。かつて６０年代に、日本の雪上ラリーの頂点だった「志賀高原ラリー」のオーガナイズもしていたという”走り屋”だけに、当時は未舗装の志賀高原ルートを１２３ＧＴで走り回った逸話には、あまりのハードな走りでダメになったＡＭＡＺＯＮのミッションも持ち出されて白熱。私と、ちょうどひとまわり先輩のＳ社長の元気さに感服するとともに、ＡＭＡＺＯＮの質実剛健なタフさを再確認しました。Ｓ社長はＶＷエンジン搭載の”スパイクタイヤ付き”バギーもお持ちで、冬季にはご自分の経営する広大なゲレンデをこのバギーで走り回っていられるとか、、、。”熱い”ＡＭＡＺＯＮ談義は、とても楽しく、時のたつのも忘れるほどでしたが、昼前にはお開き、、、。２台のＡＭＡＺＯＮは、再開を約束して帰途につきました。こうして、新たなＡＭＡＺＯＮ仲間に出会えるのも「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮのおかげです。そういえば、和倉温泉Ｔ社長のＡＭＡＺＯＮのナンバーも「・１２２」でした。
The day after I crossed the finish line of the Giro di Karuizawa, I drove off onto the Jyoetsu HW, went on to Jyoshinetsu HW and made my way to Kumanoyu in Shiga Highlands (where they had the Winter Olympics). I was meeting up with the owner of Kumanoyu Hotel, Mr. S who is the single owner of a 1969 Amazon 123GT. While I was talking to Mr. T, owner of a old ryokan in Wakura Onsen - Ishikawa pref who had bought an Amazon himself last year end, we decided we would all meet up at the Kumanoyu Hotel. Kumanoyu is about a 2hr drive from Karuizawa, but its a 5hr drive from Wakura. We soaked ourselves in the green colored hot spring and talked about our Amazons. Mr. S' Amazon is a 1969 123GT while Mr. T's is a 1969 122. Mr. S not only owned an Amazon, but also had a 1968 SAAB, 1967 Jaguar X100 replica, Citroen DS among others. He also owned a stud tired VW engine buggy which he uses to run around the ski slopes. Mr. S also had been one of the organizers of the Shiga Highland Rally in the 60s, one of the top snow rallies of the time. We all agreed that the Amazon is one of the most solid cars. By noon the next day, we all headed back.

Giro　di　KaruizawaのDay２は、２９日（土）午前８時３１分から順次浅間プリンスホテルをスタート、佐久市から女神湖、立科を周回する南回り約１５０Kmのコースに５ＣＰが設定されていました。台風２号の接近で朝から土砂降りです。相変わらずのハイスピードで、ワインディングロードを駆け抜け、ヘアピンコーナーの連続するヒルクライム、ヒルダウンで大きく重いステアリングと格闘し、何とかスポーツカーと同じアベレージで突き進むのですが、細い林道には川のように土砂が流れ、枯れ木や落ち葉がさらに滑りやすく行く手を阻み汗だくの悪戦苦闘。締め切った両サイド、リアウィンドウは、何も見えないくらいに曇りっぱなしでしたが、さすが北欧の名車、フロントウィンドウはデフロスターを全開にしていれば、まったく曇りひとつありませんでした。こんんな豪雨と悪天候の中をＡＭＡＺＯＮと共に走ったことがなかったので、新たな発見でした。途中では多くの参加車が、ボンネットを開けてストップしていました。やはり、スポーツカーが参加車の大半を占めるGiro　di　Karuizawaですから、当然、イタリア、イギリス車のオープンカーが多いわけで、参加者もずぶ濡れならば、電気系を含むエンジンまわりにもトラブルを抱えてしまったのでしょう。ＡＭＡＺＯＮは、雨漏れこそすれども、常に４０００回転近くで回し続けたエンジンは快調そのも。かえって、軽快に回るようになった気がします。毎回ヒルダウンで悩みのブレーキのフェードも、この豪雨のアタックでは、適度に冷却されてまったく心配なし。何度かヒヤっとする場面もありましたが、無事午後１時過ぎに浅間プリンスホテルにゴールすることが出来ました。ＡＭＡＺＯＮは、ワイパーが壊れたことと、相変わらずの雨漏れだけで、傷ひとつなく３年連続この厳しいハイスピードクラシックカーラリーを完走出来ました。ま、ほとんどのＣＰを誤差１秒前後で通過することは出来たのですが、やはり１／１００秒までカウントされているので、上位に君臨するベテランの皆さんの領域には、まだまだ到達していません。でも、思いっきりＡＭＡＺＯＮの限界をためし、汗をかき、共に悪戦苦闘を克服した充実感は、格別です。いつものように、成績は番外、、、でしたが、また、来年も走りたいな、、、という気持ちで一杯です。明日は、石川県から来るＴさんのＡＭＡＺＯＮと「熊の湯」で合流し、ワンオーナーでＡＭＡＺＯＮをお持ちのＳさんと温泉につかりながらＡＭＡＺＯＮ談義を楽しみます。
Day 2 of Giro di Karuizawa started at 08.31h from Asama Prince Hotel. The course wound its way thru Saku, Megami Lake, Tateshima over 150km and 5 CP. With Typhoon #2 closing in, heavy rain came down from early morning making the high speed hairpin corners on the up and down course even more treacherous. Dirt came flooding down the narrow road and the twigs and leaves on the road made the road slipper and hazardous. With all the window rolled up, both windows on the side and the rear all fogged up, but to my surprise, the front window kept clear - this must be something that Volvo managed to do so many years ago thru their dedication to safety. With the heavy rain, many of the open 2 seaters were stopped on the side of the road - probably all the water causing various electrical and engine trouble. Being a sedan, we were able to keep dry along with the engine that kept going around at a comfortable 4000rpm. The cool weather cooled down the braking system so we were able to drive along without fear of the brakes fading out. There were a few cold sweat moments, but we managed to make it safely back to the goal a little after 13.00h - my 3rd consecutive Giro di Karuizawa finish !

Giro　di　Karuizawa10周年記念大会。「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮと共に3年連続出場をしました。Day１スタートは5月28日（土）。私の63歳の誕生日で、さらに、もらったゼッケンナンバーは28番。きっとオーガナイザーの方が気を使って配慮してくれたものと思いますが、この28番というゼッケンは、私にとっては、1983年サファリラリーで日本人初クラス優勝を果たした思い出のゼッケンナンバー。特別な誕生日となった28日（土）早朝に軽井沢にお住いのＳ大先輩邸ガレージを開けるとＳ大先輩ご夫妻からの花束とバースデーカードが「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮのボンネットに添えられていました。感激　感激！！記念撮影後、スタートの浅間プリンスホテルに行くと、さらに大感激、、。なんとGiro　di　Karuizawa10周年記念大会のポスターには、「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮが浅間山をバックにＢＥＮＺ、ＬＡＮＣＩＡに続いてワインディングを攻めている水彩画が描かれていました。それもしっかりとナンバープレートの「１２２」も書き添えられて、、、。大会プログラムにも業界の重鎮Ｓ大先輩が10周年記念大会への想いを寄稿されているのですが、その背景には、昨年のGiro　di　Karuizawaを力走する「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮの写真が使われいました。なんか「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮのための記念イベントみたいで、クラシックカーラリー常連の大先輩方や、名だたる名車、美しいスポーツカー達を前に、嬉しいやら恥ずかしいやら、、、。ただ、天気予報は大雨注意報、、、。雨漏れ対策は施して来たものの、覚悟の上で午前9時01分からのスタートに臨みました。Day１は、軽井沢から長野原、嬬恋村、草津、中之条から野尻湖まで北上周回する約２５０Ｋｍ。これまでも、Giro　di　Karuizawaは、国内クラシックカーラリー屈指の本格的ハイスピード山岳ラリーとして定評があり、参加車もほとんどが２シーターのスポーツカーばかりで、4ドアセダンのＡＭＡＺＯＮは、いささか場違い感もあったのですが、そのスポーツ性が気に入っての3年連続出場です。今年は、さらにスポーツ性が高まり、”スペシャルステージ”は、スタート直後の１ＣＰに続いて約１Ｋｍの私有地を閉鎖してのヒルクライムタイムアタック。去年までは、車とウデに自信のないチームは、自由参加だったのですが、今年は、全車１／１００秒まで計測されるタイムアタック。各コーナーにはコースマーシャルも配置された本格的なヒルクライムでした。もちろん、ライトウェイトスポーツカーには、とてもとてもかないませんが、それでもしっかり汗をかきながら力走しました。Ｄａｙ１の全７ＣＰは絶妙な設定で気を抜く暇もなくスポーツカーとともに全力走行。時折り雨脚が激しくなり、志賀高原など標高の高いところでは濃霧を突き進みましたが、途中であまりの酷使か、ワイパーが壊れて、ブレードが脱落。歩いて探しに行き、応急処置でワイパーを取り付けるハプニングもありながら午後６時前に浅間プリンスホテルにゴール。毎年のことながら、重く大きなステアリングとの格闘で腕はパンパン。でも心地よい充実感で「ウェルカムパーティ」に出席しました。そして、またここで感激。オーガナイザーが「場違い」な
ＡＭＡＺＯＮで格闘する我々を紹介、誕生プレゼントまで用意してくれていました。参加者全員の温かい拍手でいただいたのは、「なぜか」車載消火器！？”あまり燃えるな、鎮火、鎮火、、”ということなのかもしれません。さらに、今回がクラシックカーラリー初参加というＭＧＡのＡさんとも意気投合。お祝いのシャンパンまでいただきました。まだ、Ｄａｙ２があるというのに、すっかり出来あがってしまった、”誕生パーティ”？？でした。
This year was the 10th anniversary of the Giro di Karuizawa. Day 1 started on the 28th of May (Sat). This coincided with my 63rd birthday and my car number coincided with my birthday being 28. I believe the organizers have outdone themselves on my behalf. On the morning of the 28th, when I opened the door to Mr. S. garage where I was spending the weekend, I found a card and a bouquet ! Another happy surprise. After taking photos, off to the rally start at Asama Prince Hotel where another special surprise was waiting. My .122 had been painted into this year's poster with the car no. .122 clearly painted in. The unfortunate part of the day was the rain. We started off at 09.01h starting from Karuizawa, going on to Naganohara, Tsumagoi, Kusatsu, Nakanojo on to Nojiri lake to make a 250km circle. Giro di Karuizawa is known for its challenging high speed up and down terrain and most of its competitors has traditionally been 2 seater sports cars so my Amazon was a bit out of place, but I really enjoy the sport driving of the Amazon and this is my 3rd year to challenge this rally. This year, the course has become even more challenging with a 1km special stage right after the 1st CP on private property. Up until last year, the special stage was for those that chose to compete, but from this year, it became a mandatory stage for all entrants. Course marshals stood on each corners making it feel like a real hill climb event. Of course, my .122 was not a real contender against the 2 seaters, but I sweated thru it. At times, rain came down in torrents and at high altitudes, the fog came out. I may have worn down my wipers as they broke off and I had to go and find them, but got safely back to the hotel at 18.00h. By that time, my arms were all worn out with all the steering. But all was well when the welcom party started and the organizers introduced our rather out of place Amazon and made a special birthday occasion for me. The gift turned out to be a fire extinguisher - don't get too hot?

今週末は、恒例のクラシックカーラリー「Giro　di　Karuizawa」です。「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮは、３年連続出場です。とはいえ、「Giro　di　Karuizawa」は１０周年記念イベントなのです。今年もまた、軽井沢にお住いのＳ大先輩とともに「楽しもうと、、」思っております。ま、苦手な「線踏み」にまったく執着心が無いことと、「Giro　di　Karuizawa」は、名だたる本格山岳ラリーであり、参加車も例年通り、２シータースポーツの名車がほとんどで、ワインディングのヒルクライムとヒルダウンの連続には、ちょっと、、、というわけで、「楽しませて」いただきます。居並ぶスポーツカーの中に、「ズングリ」ＡＭＡＺＯＮですから、いささか場違いではありますが、それなりにスペシャルステージもアタックします。今年のゼッケンは２８番。この２８番は、私にとっては、ラッキーナンバーなのです。私がラリーを始めるきっかけとなり、共に２０年あまりＷＲＣを戦った尊師　故オベ・アンダーソンが１９７１年にルノー・アルピーヌＡ１１０でモンテカルロラリーを初制覇した時が２８番。私が１９８３年にスバルでサファリラリー日本人初クラス優勝総合５位になった時が、これまた２８番、、、。それに誕生日が「Giro　di　Karuizawa」のスタートする２８日、、。だから、とても楽しみです。ただ、残念なのが、今週末は雨模様。もうちょっと梅雨の到来が遅れてくれるのでは、、、と期待していたのですが、見事に裏切られました。「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮは、ウィンドウシールや、そこら中から雨漏れがするのです。ま、仕方ないので、両サイドウィンドウ回りをビニールテープでシーリングしました。もちろん運転席と助手席は除いてですが、、、。それに、ウィンドウには、「Ｇｌａｃｏ」なる強力シリコンコーティングをしっかり施しました。「Giro　di　Karuizawa」は２８日（土）０９：０１に浅間プリンスホテルをスタートし、２９日（日）お昼にゴールですが、私は、明日２７日（金）未明に東京を出て、Ｓ大先輩邸に居候。前夜祭ﾊﾟｰﾃｨを楽しむことにします。
The annual Giro di Karuizawa will start this weekend. My .122 Amazon will run for the 3rd consecutive year. This is a special year, though, as the rally is celebrating its 10th anniversary. I plan to enjoy myself with Mr. S. I will never be able to like the line crossing excercise and with the course laid out across the hilly territory with many famous 2 seater sport cars competing, I can but enjoy myself. The Amazon stands out a bit being 4 seater roundish car, but we plan to challenge the special stage. This is, my car number is 28. 28 is my lucky number. My mentor, Ove Andersson won the 1971 Monte Carlo rally with this Renault Alpine 110 with car no. 20. I was racing with car no.28 when I was able to get to 5th position at the 1983 Safari Rally with a Subaru. My birthday is the day that the rally starts - the 28th. Therefore, lots to look forward to, except the weather which is supposed to turn to rain. I had expected the rainy season to start a bit later but things happen. I have sealed the front and back windows with vinyl tape and coated everything with Glaco silicon coating. The rally will start at 09.00h on the 28th and goal at noon the folowing day. I will depart from Tokyo on the 27th and spend some time with Mr. S.

ご無沙汰です。長い冬眠、、、。そして大震災。恒例の「春のＡＭＡＺＯＮツーリング」もキャンセルとなり、「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮは、じっと地下駐車場でシーズン開幕を待ち続けて来ました。5月も下旬を迎え、やっと目覚めの時がやって来ました。さあ、いよいよクラシックカーのシーズン開幕です。ということで、5月26日（木）本屋さんに並んだ「ｃａｒ　ｍａｇａｚｉｎｅ」（ﾈｺ・ﾊﾟﾌﾞﾘｯｼﾝｸﾞ刊）No３９７　7月号に「・１２２」AMAZONと私がカラー4ページで掲載されています。この号はＶＯＬＶＯ特集で、「北欧自動車版ボルボ１２２Ｓ＆１８００Ｓ　カタログ全８ページ　完全復刻盤」も綴じ込み付録で付いています。ＶＯＬＶＯ　ＭＵＳＥＵＭの現地取材記事に続き、「アマゾンで青春時代をもう一度、、、」というタイトルで「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮとの成りそめなどが掲載されています。ＡＭＡＺＯＮファンはもちろん、ＶＯＬＶＯファンならライブラリーに是非加えておきたい一冊です。ご興味のある方は本屋さんへお急ぎ下さい。
Well, here we are again. Winter, the big earthquake, cancelation of the Spring Amazon Touring - my .122 Amazon has been hibernating underground until now. With the end of May getting closer, it is time to wake up. This year will be kicked off with a special 4 page coverage of my .122 Amazon in Car Magazine no.397 (July issue). It is an issue that focuses on Volvo and has a reproduction of the Volvo 122S & 1800S catalog inserted. It also covers the Volvo Museum and is a must have for all Volvo fans so hurry over to the book store nearest to you.
