HELPHOS 002.jpghephos²òÀâ.jpgÅÄÊÕP1800.jpg
The postman just dropped off a package. The sender is Mr. T who sold me the Marchal lamp last week. I opened the pack in a hurry and out came a Helphos spotlight. When I visited Mr. T's shop, I had seen this Helphos and had wanted it desparately, but after considering the contents of my purse, I had to let it go and keep my focus on the Marchal. This Helphos is something that every co-driver had about 40 years ago if you were racing at Monte Carlo or RAC. It was used to spot important milestones along the rally route. These days, everything is lighted so its no longer needed. But for me, this is something I had lived with during my haydays of rallying when I was still a student. Mr. T had taken very good care of this Helphos and the glycerine that you use to stick it to the inside of the front glass was like new. And so, there it is stuck and looks great. The grey skies of rainy season was blown away with this unexpected gift. When the rainy season lets go, I look forward to going touring with Mr.T with his P1800E and me with .122 + Helphos.

When I went to look for fog lamps at Mr T's antique shop in Nishifunabashi, Mr. TK, also a member of TACC came in. Mr. TK lives close by to Mr Ts and runs a large spa facility - what used to be a sento. He owns a '66 Triumph TR4A, '67 Alfa Romeo Giulia 1600GTV, and a Lotus Super 7 and others. I went over to his place to take a look and he told me he never uses car wax on his treasures as wax tends to pile up in the moulding, but instead, uses a silicon mop. All his cars were all shiny & bright even though he keeps them under a cover in a parking place without any roof. What was even more impressive was Mr. TK's classic motorbike collection. Triumph, Motogucci, BMW, etc. Even an old military bike - 8 in total. They were all active bikes that would start with a single kick. To keep them in running shape, he has one of the bikes worked on each day of the week, so his garage is all set with tools, work bench and mechanic. He lives the ideal car life, but he was a very friendly guy and even asked if I wanted to take the Super 7 for a spin.

Marchal.jpg090622DEN2.jpg090622DEN£±.jpg
I got a bit tied up with work and so its been a while since my last entry. With the economy being what it is, the motorsports industry is going thru various issues and with the time difference with Europe, I have been kept running at all hours of the day. This means that my Amazon is sitting in the garage with its cover tightly in place. But it is rainy season after all, so this may be for the better. There has been some progress, though, and I have finally been able to get my hands on the Marchal lights that I have so coveted. I had been looking for some time for a fog/spot lamp for my .122, and at the last TACC (Tokyo Ariake Car Club) I met Mr. T ('71 Volvo P1800E owner) who owns an antique shop in Nishifunabashi. The Marchal is a "662/762" and has the typical bellybutton design of the '40s. The bulbs are yellow but the cover is clear glass so it looks yellow from the front but white from the side. Mr. T's shop was a chock full of treasures like a lamp with scriptured Bosch logo etched on it, Lucas, Hella and others that I have never seen before. But for the .122, I wanted something large enough but classic and so I went for the Marchal. According to Mr. T, this lamp belongs to the "Fantastic Series" which start with the number 6. I had seen this lamp at auction sites, but had to refrain because the prices were so high, but Mr. T agreed to sell me this Marchal at a "gentlemens agreement" price. He even gave me a pair of white and yellow extra bulbs. It even came in the old box with the cat mark on it. This has been a most fruitful day for me, and I will forever be thankful to Mr. T. for all this.

Rainy season has come again. This year, I have my .122 with its rusty floor which makes it the more depressing. But this is the necessary season for Japan to welcome in the summer.
Every year during rainy season, I take out a book "Polish your Car on a Rainy Day"-Kadokawa publishing written by Hiroyuki Itsuki, winner of various literary prizes. I worked with Mr. Itsuki when I was involved in magazine publishing for K publishing. He was a true car enthusiast and once you started him off, he would go on forever about cars. He owned a Volvo 122S Amazon in the later 1960s which he called his White¡¡Polar Bear. He wrote a short story called "Amazon - Once More Time" which featured his Polar Bear and this is included in the book I mentioned. He describes the Amazon 122 as a car that is "the most Volov like of all Volvo", "drives down rocky roads without¡¡a¡¡groan", "maintains its unique high waistline and emphasizes its Volvo-ness when all other cars go down the trendy road", "is perfected to the millimeter whether you look at it from the top or the side", "once you slide into the seat, the steering come naturally in front of you, and the long shift lever come right under where you put down your hand. The gear shifts into position with precision with a slight click and the 3rd gear needs to be pushed with the tip of the fingers into gear". "I enjoyed driving my rather heavy looking Amazon energetically in 3rd gear", "pushing the not too light long stroked gears was a fun excercise", "I used to take long drives to Izu and the Shinshu mountains whenever I had time". He continues, "if the Amazon had a weak point, it would be that it tended to overheat during the summer, but this weakness made the tough car that much more dear to me". The short story is about a short rendevous between his White¡¡Polar Bear and bright red young Amazon girl. Just what you need on wet day like this. I also owned my own White¡¡Polar Bear 30 years ago when I was about 30 years old. In the epilogue Mr. Itsuki writes "As time goes by, cars, people, towns, music changes and more than that, you find that you yourself have weathered rapidly with time. So this is a story about repeated encounters, partings, nothing more, nothing less".

During the week at Giro di Karuizawa, my .122 struggled in the rain and when I got back to Mr. S' house after the rally and looked under the floor mat, I found that it was flooded. Same for the trunk space. The space under the spare tire had become a pond. I had never driven the .122 in the rain and had even never put it through a car wash. I had just wiped the car with a wet rag and put 2 layers of cover over it. The dealer that sold me the car had shown me the underside of the car and told me that it had an undercoating so the condition was super. I had totally believed in this. But after seeing the flood, I peeled off the floor mat and saw to my horror, lots of water and RUST ! The condition was worst on the driver side and when I scratched together some of the rust, it turned out to be a nice sized pile. Its easy to see that with all this rust, the floor panel now had holes. I was crestfallen. But what can you do. Next sunny day, I peeled off the floor mat, took out the rust and tried to dry out the car. I went to Tokyu Hands and bought an aluminum panel (34X44cm-Yen 2,800 each) with holes in it and laid it on the front floor of the car. Sometime, I will have to buy a new floor panel set like Mr. O and weld it on. The aluminum panel is an emergency measure to ensure that my feet don't fall out when I am driving. It turns out my .122 looks great from the outside but as I drive on, I am finding various issues that come out from the inside of the car. I will have to be careful to stay out of the rain and keep my feet safely inside of the car.

I was pleasantly surprised yesterday and the day before when I saw that this blog, which I had started without much though about one month ago, had more than 350 visitors. When I took a look at the access analysis page, I saw that the part about Giro de Karuizawa had drawn a lot of interest. This blog is translated into english and this seems to also be helping. The Amazon had been developed with the US market in mind and the majority of sales was made in the US. Even now, you see people, especially on the West Coast, with Amazon hotrod cars and other enjoying drag racing and classic car races. Perhaps these people were a bit surprised that we actually have classic car rallies in Japan.

Day 2 of Giro started on 31st May at 08.30h. It was a course that made its way from Asama Prince hotel to Myogi Mountain, Uchiyama pass and 5 checkpoints - 9CP to 13CP - were waiting for us on this course. The weather report showed that the clouds would give way to sunshine, but it was raining from the morning. When we went out to the parking lot, the open cars were trying to make do by covering up the seats with plastic. My .122 is a four door so a bit out of place in this classic sports rally, but this weather really made me glad it had a roof. We decided to take the rally day by day and at the first 9CP, we came in 0.59 away from the scheduled time and came up to 37th place. At the next 10CP, 2.21sec difference. Not too bad, but that was when the bad started. Coming back to Karuizawa and into the Sengataki parking lot for the line crossing test, I made a big mistake. It was a continuous time control - 9.60 sec followed by 7.20sec. Here, for some unknown reason even to myself, I kind of made a short cut around the pylons, realized my mistake, stopped and reversed which led to a 20 sec penalty. At the next 12CP, we made it in 0.26 sec away, but was down to 81st place. I guess I was seriously shaken with that mistake and at the last CP, came in 10.68sec away. We had seen that the roads were jammed due to the outlet mall and we had taken a different road to get to what we thought was 2 min lead to the control time. But we had made a very simple calculation error - so be it - but left me rather disappointed. Ah, but this was my first classic car rally with lots to learn from. I really appreciate the support given by Mr. O who served as a our service car, Mr. M who came out in the rain to support us, Mr. I of TACC who taught me the ABC of classic car rally and everybody else who gave us their support.

Day 1 of Giro held between 225km and 8 checkpoints came to an end on May 30th 5pm at Asama Prince Hotel. The whole day had been wet and in the high sections like Sugadaira, there was heavy fog. We started off at 78th place and the continued to struggle at most of the CPs with a 5 to 7 sec delay at all the 6 following CPs. However, we were not utterly hopeless and made it across CP5 at Sugadaira with a differnce of 0.23 and suddenly found ourselves in 13th place. But this was momentary and when the day ended, we found ourselves in position 57. If you can make it in within the second, you can make it to a good position, but if you are more than 5 sec out, you don't get anywhere. Thats how tight this rally is. This is all measured thru a very precise timing machine so you can say, the whole rally is about "crossing the line" to the micro second. In order to be able to make any good out of this rally, we were equipped with twin trips, 2 countdown stopwatch that can measure up to the 100th of a second and the Map Shot 2 which had a timer that counted second. My co driver had to keep his eyes on the map at the same time he had to handle all of this, so you can imagine how difficult it is.

The first day of Giro started off from Asama Prince Hotel, made its way thru Komoro and Ueda City, up thru Jizo Pass and into Sugadaira, Kusatsu Onsen, Tsumagoi, down Asama Shirane Kazan route and down back into Karuizawa. A 225kn route with 8 checkpoints. It was a high speed rally with .122 only able to make it barely 5 min. within the time. The course was set within the same type of route as the Japan Alpen Rally in the past going up and down 2000m class passes which is quite a lot of work for the old classic cars in this rally. There was a 800 meter hill climb that were were able to choose whether to participate. We decided we might as well since we entered the rally, so we wset off with the Porsche 356, Louts, Lancia, Renault A110, Triumph, Alfa Romeo and other great sportscars. We felt a bit out of place but climbed up the hill on 2nd gear to get the starting point. We had to wait in line, but being a Scandinavian car, the water temperature rose and we had to turn on the electric fan. At the starting point, the official said "wow, I never expected to see an Amazon here. But I guess the Amazon has left its mark in Safari, Acropolis and Monte Carlo rallies. I really like this car". So with this strong supporting words we started off but this was and Amazon after all, and even tho the distance was only 800m there was a 20sec lag between the cars ahead of us. The CPs measured us to the 100th of a second and during this time, we had to make sure that the cars were ok, we didn't go off course. At the same time, I wondered where my comrades were. There was Mr. S on a P1800E, a Fiat50 Spider from the TACC. We sometime got to run together during the Giro which made the whole event even more enjoyable.

Each entrant is allowed a support car at the "Giro". Entry fee for the rally itself was 100,000 yen which included a party and a room at the hotel for 2. The support car entry was 60,000 yen for 2 including a party. When you think about it, at this price, you would think it makes more sense to enter the rally, but for Mr.O, his .123 Amazon 123GT was in the the shop for a transmission overhaul and other. Mr. O had finished 6th at the recent Japan Historic Rally and was ideal as a support car. The support car with car no.S37 turned out to be an eye turner. The BMW was a 355 open metaltop. Only a few cars had made it to Japan and cost more than 10 mils yen. With its elegant coupe body and luxurious leather interior, the BMW was packed with Amazon parts in cardboard boxes and other misc. tools and old rags. The trunk existed for the sole purpose of storing the 3 part foldable roof so everything had to be put in the rear of the car. This extra luxury support car followed my .122 Amazon with Mr. O's wife giving us timely advice.
